Training Opportunities

  • Research demonstrates that providing youth greater voice and leadership in the programs that serve them has many benefits: their participation grows, as does their engagement, interest, and investment. A greater leadership role provides new opportunities to develop 21st century skills like problem-solving, collaboration, communication & critical thinking.

    As a result of the 2-day training participants will be able to:

    • Identify meaningful roles youth can play in programs

    • Learn the components and stages of Neutral Zone’s Teen Advisory Council

    • Examine participatory research processes as a way to engage youth

    • Learn and use planning strategies that can be applied to involving students in project

    • Understand the components of youth-adult partnerships (YAP) and how to support YAP

    • Learn the components of intrinsic motivation and how to support the developmental needs of young people.

  • Neutral Zone offers a 2-day Introduction course and a 3-day Train-the-Trainer.

    The Introduction to Restorative Practices and Circles provides the theoretical grounding for RP, applied strategies and practices to effectively implement RP, as well as an introduction to the history of RP, as it relates to indigenous and native peoples. Workshops in this series are designed to be active, engaging and focused on applying practical strategies necessary to implement RP in classrooms, schools, and youth organizations that are rooted in sound theoretical principles.

    Train the Trainer (ToT) course for Restorative Practices exclusively for school and youth program staff who have completed the 2-Day Intro Restorative Practices workshop. The ToT aims to prepare participants to lead the Intro to RP & Circles training to colleagues and youth alike. The training is organized around the following themes:

    • How to be an Effective and Self Aware Trainer

    • Facilitation and the Restorative Practices Content

    • Training Others in the RP Content

Get Restorative this Summer

Restorative practices include strategies to help foster positive relationships, build community and give youth voice. Restorative practices (RP) builds social capital and achieves social discipline through participatory learning and decision-making. RP repairs harm when relationships have been damaged and can reduce violence and bullying. This summer we are offering three training opportunities. Registration for all training opportunities is available through our partners at Eastern Michigan University's Engage@EMU unit. 

This summer we are offering three training opportunities. Our 2-Day Introduction to Restorative Practices & Circles provides attendees the opportunity to engage in the theoretical foundations of restorative practices and prepares them to implement both proactive and reactive strategies in the classroom and school. Anyone working in a school building or school district (classroom teachers, administrators, behavioral interventionists, social workers, etc.) can enroll.

And for those trying to build systems capacity, we offer a 3-Day Train-the-Trainer, which provides participants the professional skills necessary to train others in restorative practices, using the curriculum and materials of our 2-day introductory training. Participants engage in learning facilitation strategies and frameworks with a specific focus on planning and delivery of an active, participatory workshop in Restorative Practices. Participants must complete the 2-day Introductory training prior to the TOT.

Advancing RP Implementation in Your Building or District

This 1-day course is designed to support educational leaders in starting to implement restorative practices school- or district-wide with more intentionality and depth. Intended for district, building and instructional leaders or other staff who serve as SEL or Behavioral supports building wide.  Whether you need dedicated time and space to think through implementation or are in a position to put your plan in motion come fall, this training is for you.

Course goals include: Developing a “why” for school transformation guided by RP; Understanding the components of Implementation Science as a framework for implementing school-wide RP transformation; Beginning to design an implementation team for RP transformation; Analyzing current readiness, opportunities, and challenges for implementing RP transformation; Considering strategies for making RP transformation an easier lift; Making a plan to start the process.

Neutral Zone is excited to offer two training opportunities for youth-serving organizations this spring. Registration is on a  first come/first serve basis and will be limited to 32 participants (up to 4 participants per organization) at a cost of $25/participant. Both trainings will be hosted at MASH Detroit (14711 Mack Ave).

Restorative Practices Professional Learning Series

Neutral Zone's Youth Driven Spaces introduces an exciting new webinar-based professional learning series focused on Restorative Practices.  Seminars are led by professionals in the field who are transforming education through school- and district-wide restorative practices implementation.  

The learning series will focus on applied strategies and case studies for implementing reforms with Restorative Practices. 

This session will center a case study about engaging students as partners in school culture and climate work using restorative practices. Through a presentation about the work of Oak Park High School's Distinguished Knights, participants will learn about: 

  • Students implementing restorative practices by leading community building and proactive circles

  • Student-led restorative circles

  • Implementation challenges, barriers and strategies to facilitate staff buy-in
