NorthStar Young women: join us for a workshop series on empowering yourself. In collaboration with Dance Gallery Studio, NorthStar Summer Camp offers daily workshops on nutrition, self-esteem, dance, body image, self-defense, and yoga. We'll have meaningful talks, delicious snacks and amazing friendships, all of which will culminate in a day of canoeing and an an over-night lock-in. This weeklong workshop puts teens interested in developing their skills as writers together with nationally and locally recognized performance poets and short story writers. Students will take part in daily workshops to work on their poetry and short fiction, participate in sessions with guest instructors, and attend and perform in public readings. Each day we will hike 1 to 4 miles across Ann Arbor between photography destinations, including the Arboretum, downtown Ann Arbor and U-M North Campus. Water and light snack will be provided daily. Bring a lunch, sneakers, sunglasses, camera (although we have plenty to use) and anything else you might need as we trek through the town. Students will develop and workshop ideas until they are conceptually and visually resolved in preparation to paint a mural. The class will begin with basic exercises in drawing, design, and painting to give new artists the necessary skills while refreshing more experienced artists. Participants will use realistic accuracy, composition skills, and visual communication abilities to paint a mural at Neutral Zone. Bring a bag lunch.
