In Memory of David Shayman

We call music the “gateway” to the Neutral Zone. A teen might visit for the first time because a friend’s band is playing, or maybe because they heard about cheap recording time in the NZ Studios. Once we get them in the door, we encourage them to dream big- and we do our best to provide the resources to follow those dreams: a teen-operated record label and promotions company, weekend concerts and parties, classes in Turntablism, Beatmaking and Audio Recording. Teens flock to the Zone every day after school to use the gear they can’t afford on their own- a few Macs, a set of Technics and an MPC.

We believe that any one of these teens – just every day kids from Ann Arbor – can do big things. Maybe get signed… Maybe appear on a grammy-nominated album… Tour the world…

We thank David “Disco D” Shayman for proving to us and our teens that a kid from Ann Arbor can make it.

Our thoughts are with the Shayman family, and we are grateful to them for helping us encourage and inspire the next generation of DJs and producers.
