Music Technology

24 Hour Music Project(CLOSED)
June 27-28, 10am-10am, Cost: $100
Your Mission: in 24 hours write, track, and mix a collaborative recording. In our all night studio session, we will work through various writing and recording modes to create songs, soundscapes, noise and sonic events under the limitation of a single day. Bring your own instruments or you are welcome to our full arsenal of electric, acoustic, and percussion instruments

Art of the MC(CLOSED)
July 6-10, 1-4pm, Cost: $150
Make and perfect your own rhymes to instrumentals. Record a track in the NZ Studio with extended mentored lab sessions so your beats sound their best. In addition, we learn how to promote our music - copyrighting, publishing, and label/self release.

Music Technology(CLOSED)
July 20-24, 1-4pm, Cost: $200
Learn the basics of a music-recording studio. We provide the introduction for electronic beatmaking stations with Mboxed and Mini Mac computers featuring Reason, Logic, Garageband, and ProTools LE software programs and a fully functional recording studio. We feature keyboard classes, lyric writing workshops and provide ample time for music creation and recording.

Youth Owned Records: BOOTCAMP(CLOSED)
July 27-31, 1-4pm, Cost: $150
Check out YOR, the Neutral Zone's teen-operated record label. Learn the inner workings of the ever changing music industry. In our week-long workshop we unlock the secrets to promote, tour, perform, and record under the guidance of Neutral Zone performance music staff.

Literary Arts

Volume Poetry and Short Fiction
June 21, 7pm orientation dinner; June 22-26, 10am-3pm; evening performances June 25 and 26 at 7pm, Cost: $200
This weeklong workshop puts our interests in developing skills as writers together with nationally and locally recognized performance poets and short story writers. We will have an opportunity to take part in daily workshops on poetry and short story fiction, participate in sessions with guest instructors, and attend and perform in poetry readings.

Visual Arts

Glorious Junk Art (CLOSED)
June 29-July 3, 1-4pm, Cost: $150
People have been making junk art for almost 100 years. In this class we take materials that are ordinarily thrown away to create art. We learn the fundamentals of 2D and 3D design, and then get right to work. We start small and move to large scale projects.

Beginning Photography I(CLOSED)
July 6-10, 1-4pm, Cost: $200
Learn the fundamental principles of photography such as composition, value, color, portraiture, nature photography, and abstraction. We hike to fascinating photographic destinations, take tons of photographs, and return to the Neutral Zone for group critiques. Bring your own camera or we have plenty to share.

Beginning Photography II
July 20-24, 1-4pm, Cost: $200

Through Action (CLOSED)
July 20–24, 1-4pm, Cost: $150
Performance art is a media of physical action. It can span range of physical comedy, dance, spoken word, puppetry, costumes, music, creating interactive social situations, and more. Engage in hilarious, strange, and meaningful performance art exercises and then generate your own artistic works. All performances are videotaped and put on a DVD to take home.

M.A.T.E.S (Make Awesome T-shirts & Enjoy Summer)
(CLOSED) July 27-31, 1-4pm, Cost: $200
Ever wonder how to print and design a t-shirt? We go through the steps of silk-screening, including researching, designing and printing our own line of t-shirts. A partnership with staff from Modati. Each Silk Screening student will design and produce 5 shirts. Making Murals August 3-7, 1-4pm, Cost: $150 Paint a mural at the Neutral Zone. Beginning with basic exercises in drawing, designing, and painting, new artists will gain necessary skills while refreshing more experienced artists. Participants will use realistic accuracy, composition, and visual communication skills to create murals.

Making Murals(CLOSED)
August 3-7, 1-4PM, Cost: $150

Advanced Photography
August 10-14, 1-4pm, Cost: $200
For students who already know the fundamentals of photography, take your photography skills to the next step. Generate your own subject matter and produce self-directed projects. Participants take photos on hikes throughout Ann Arbor, gain inspiration from contemporary photographers, and participate in individual and group critiques. Bring your own camera or we have plenty to share.

Calling All Teens Back

All Night- Prep Party
August 22-23, 4pm-8am (bring $5 for pizza and snacks to share).
End of the Summer Exhibition, August 27, 7pm. This all night event will put our creative talents to the test as we design, create, and promote the End of the Summer Celebration. From poetry to music to art, we call all teens who attended any of the summer programs to return to the Zone for this all night prep party. Email rebecca@neutral-zone.org directly to RSVP.
